tricks. Let's take a step back and review The Man and the fight
against Him in history:
January 1:
1804
- Haitian slaves, led by Jean Jacques Desalines, declare independence.
Haiti becomes first free black nation-state in the world; U.S. refuses
to recognize Haiti for the next 70 or so years.
1976 - Potheads alter the "HOLLYWOOD" sign to
read "HOLLYWEED". Right on, brothas! (More

January 2:
1939
- Time magazine named chancellor Adolf Hitler its "Man of the Year."
1996 - Right on sweet sistahs! An estimated 100,000 Bangladeshi
women travel from the countryside to attend a rally in Dacca, the capital,
to protest Islamic clerics' attacks on women's education and employment.
January 3:
1964 - 500,000 New York pupils stay at home in protest
against racial segregation.
1971 - Joseph Cullman, then Chairman of the Board of Philip
Morris, Inc., is interviewed on CBS' Face the Nation.
The interviewers asked Cullman if he was aware of a massive study that
showed that babies of smoking mothers were had a greater incidence of
low birth weight than non-smoking mothers, that smoking mothers had
an increased risk of stillbirth and infant death within 28 days of birth.
Cullman said he was aware of the study and its results. He said, "Some

January 4:
1943
- It wasn't bad enough choosing Hitler in 1939. Joseph Stalin appears
as Time's 1942 "Man of the Year"
1997 - 80,000 rally in Ogoni portions of Nigeria against
military dictatorship and Shell Oil's plans to destroy Ogoni land. Nigerian
Army opens fire on peaceful demonstration, wounding four.
January 5:
1869 - First black labor convention in U.S.
1942 - John B. Hughes of the Mutual Broadcasting Company
opens an attack on Japanese Americans in California. He charges they
are engaged in espionage and their dominance in produce production and
control of the food supply are part of a master war plan. The attack
is joined by "patriotic" organizations and white farming interests.
January 6:
1994 - Ice skater Nancy Kerrigan is attacked by Tonya
Harding's bodyguard.
January 7:
1939 - AFL organizer Tom Mooney freed after a 22-year
imprisonment on false charges.
January 8:
1992 - U.S. President George Bush gets ill & vomits
on Japanese prime minister's lap during Japanese tour.
January 11:
1964 - Although the negative affects had been known for
years, the U.S. Surgeon General warns against smoking for the first
time. Of course, it is equally amazing to learn how many people actually
need to be told that inhaling smoke is harmful.
January 12:
1965 - At 10:58 a.m. PT, scientists conduct what they
called a "controlled excursion", burning up a nuclear rocket
in Nevada and putting a radioactive cloud over Los Angeles. Six million
residents were used as human guinea pigs in the experiment. (More

January 13:
1979 - The Village People are sued for libel by the Young
Men's Christian Association over their single "YMCA." The
suit is later dropped.
January 14:
1963 - George C, Wallace is sworn in as Governor of Alabama,
his address states "segregation now; segregation tomorrow; segregation
forever!"
1972 - "Sanford & Son" starring Redd Foxx
premieres on NBC TV
January 15:
1964 - Teamsters negotiate 1st national labor contract
